Oily, acne-prone skin is terrible. There is nothing worse than suffering breakouts constantly. Of course, there are ways that you can banish oily skin such as using the correct products and a good skincare routine. But what about food? You can absolutely eat your way to a healthier and clearer oil-free skin. Many foods such as those high in sugar and saturated fat create blocked pores and show up on your skin. Try adding these three foods to your diet as regularly as possible to get the best out of your skincare routine, and aim for oil-free clearer skin.

Citrus

All citrus fruits are high in Vitamin C and antioxidants. Vitamin C has a proven effect on tightening saggy skin, as well as helping collagen production. As we age, we lose collagen at a rate of 1% per year, which can all add up to our skin looking loose and old. Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and naartjie can give our skin the nutritional boost it needs to get rid of wrinkles and blemishes.

How To Eat Them:
  • Drink at least 3 cups of fresh citrus fruit juice a day
  • Add lemon slices to hot water, and drink throughout the day
  • Add citrus to pasta or meat sauces for a zingy bite
  • Add fresh citrus segments to plain yogurt for a great breakfast

Whole Grains And Pulses

It’s so easy to grab a slice of white bread, a pizza, or some processed pasta when we are hungry. Choosing the healthier option of whole grains or pulses will have your skin thank you later, however. You can still have a delicious bowl of pasta, just make sure that it is whole wheat or, even better, whole mixed grain pasta. Whole-grain bread can be chosen over white bread, and lentils and other pulses such as chickpeas and beans make a great lunchtime meal. They are full of antioxidants and nutrients, perfect to maintain healthy and glowing skin.

How To Eat Them:
  • Bake some lentil or chickpea loaves, and keep them on hand for a snack or breakfast on the go
  • Bake chickpeas in the oven with seasoning for a great starter or even party food
  • Blend together various pulses for a quick and delicious soup
  • Make sandwiches with whole, multigrain health bread

Dark Chocolate

Yes, you read that correctly. Dark chocolate is great for your skin. It has various anti-inflammatory properties and has been proven to improve the appearance of your skin thanks to an abundance of flavanols. Dark Chocolate may also have sun protecting properties, so pack a piece in your bag to eat every day. Of course, seeing as though it is chocolate and does involve sugar, it should be eaten in moderation.

How To Eat It:
  • Keep some good quality dark chocolate on you as a snack
  • Pair it with citrus by shaving a small bit over orange segments in a bowl
  • Add it to plain yogurt in chunks as a breakfast alternative
  • Add it to sauces for dark meat such as venison
