The Difference Between Day & Night Moisturizer

Why You Should Have Both

Face cream is face cream. Am I right? It doesn’t matter whether you use so-called day cream at night, and night cream during the day. Well, the truth is that the two creams are as different as night and day. Each sort of cream has vastly different textures and ingredients, and have been formulated to do different things. So read on to find out why you should have both a day cream and a night cream, and use them at the correct times.

Day Cream

A good day cream from a well-known brand has all sorts of beneficial ingredients in it. Day time is when your skin receives the most damage. Free radicals, the sun, pollution and even the wind can have an effect on your skin’s appearance. All of these dry it out as well as increase the signs of ageing. Day creams are usually light, non-greasy and brightening. They most often contain an SPF factor, (that would be pretty useless at night), as well as possibly a slight colour. When you choose your day cream be sure to check whether it has a colour to it and whether that colour matches your skin tone.

Day Cream Ingredients

Day creams can have a range of ingredients depending on your skin type and the sort of lifestyle that you lead. Popular ones include:

  • Vitamin C
  • Sunscreen
  • Omega 3
  • Vitamin E
  • Hyaluronic Acid

Night Cream

A night cream is a very different animal. It is usually much heavier, with a thicker texture to moisturise and rejuvenate your skin while you sleep. When we sleep our bodies begin the repairing process. Our cells are assessed, and faulty or old ones are replaced. This process can be found in bones, muscles and skin; pretty much the entire body.

A good night cream will facilitate the rejuvenation of your skin while you sleep by introducing key ingredients that the skin needs. When you are sleeping, your skin cream doesn’t need to be under makeup, so it doesn’t need to be absorbed as quickly as a day cream. This allows it to be much richer. The ingredients can be more concentrated and have a greater effect on your skin than a day cream.

Night Cream Ingredients

Night creams are rich in heavy-duty ingredients. Their concentration is often heavier than a day cream, so the cream appears thicker and richer. Some popular ingredients include:

  • Retinols
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Botanicals such as Jojoba Oil
  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Q-10
  • Peptides
